Fillers vs. Botox
Injectable fillers and neurotoxins like Botox both work to correct fine lines and wrinkles on aging facial skin, however they do so by different means. Fillers restore volume and firmness, while neurotoxins smooth the skin by relaxing its underlying muscles. Both treatment methods are safe, effective and minimally invasive.
At New York Laser & Skin Care, we use fillers made with hyaluronic acid, a gel-like substance naturally produced by the body that gives skin its elasticity and ability to retain moisture. These fillers compensate for the reduced production of hyaluronic acid which occurs with age, causing skin to become thinner and less firm.
Injectable neurotoxins are made with a small dose of botulinum toxin, a substance produced by a species of bacteria. This toxin treats the fine lines made visible by facial muscle contractions—known as expression lines—by blocking the nerve signals sent to these muscles.
This causes the muscles to remain in a relaxed state, leaving the surface skin smooth and free of creases. Unlike fillers, neurotoxins will not treat fine lines and wrinkles caused by skin volume loss.

Filler Brands We Carry
Our clinic carries three different brands of hyaluronic acid fillers: Juvederm, Restylane and Perlane. All three work to address signs of aging by restoring facial skin’s lost volume, moisture and suppleness. Each one is specialized to treat a specific area of the face.
Juvederm
Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid filler formulated with a small amount of lidocaine, an anaesthetic. This helps to reduce any discomfort caused by the injection.
Juvederm products are available in several different subvarieties with slightly different consistencies and concentrations of ingredients, each designed to treat a different area of the face. They are most commonly used to restore fullness to the cheeks, and to smooth wrinkles and lines in the mouth and nose area.
Restylane
Restylane hyaluronic acid fillers have a very thin consistency, making them ideal for treating areas of the face with sensitive, delicate skin. They are most often used to restore volume to thin lips, smooth fine lines around the mouth and reduce the visibility of dark circles under the eyes.
Perlane
Perlane fillers have a thicker consistency than Restylane and are effective in restoring fullness to areas of the face with thick skin and fat deposits. Perlane products are well suited for smoothing deeper, more noticeable wrinkles and folds in the cheek, chin and eyelid areas.
Botox and Other Neurotoxins
We carry two brands of injectable neurotoxin; Botox and Dysport, each of which are used to treat fine lines in separate areas of the face. Neurotoxin treatments will address fine lines made visible by muscular movements in the forehead, brow, eye and mouth areas. However, they are ineffective at restoring skin volume and moisture loss.
Botox Cosmetic
Botox is currently the most popular injectable neurotoxin. It is very effective in targeting creases and wrinkles in the brow area, as well as crow’s feet in the eye area. It can also treat lower parts of the face, such as the tear trough, chin and mouth area.
Dysport
Dysport is an injectable neurotoxin formulated specifically to treat glabellar lines. These are the two vertical lines that often develop between the eyebrows as a natural result of aging. Unlike Botox, Dysport is not approved for treating other areas of the face.

Related Treatments
Filler and neurotoxin injections can be safely combined with a number of other treatments to help further restore volume, texture, firmness and smoothness to aging skin.
- Laser skin resurfacing treatments use lasers to stimulate the production of collagen in the skin, contributing to a smoother, tighter, more supple appearance
- Microdermabrasion targets signs of aging by using a handpiece to abrade surface skin, stimulating the growth of firmer, fuller, more evenly textured new skin
- Chemical peels work similarly to microdermabrasion treatments but instead use a combination of acids to dissolve surface skin and encourage new skin growth
- PRP (platelet-rich plasma therapy) is a rejuvenating skin treatment that involves creating a formula from a small sample of a patient’s own blood and reinjecting it into key points to stimulate fuller, firmer, healthier skin

FAQ
How quickly will I see results?
Filler injections will restore some volume and firmness to the skin immediately after an injection. Full results will become apparent after about 1 week, once any bruising or swelling has dissipated. Neurotoxin injections will produce noticeable results in as little as 2 days.
How long do injectables last?
Hyaluronic acid fillers will typically last between 6 and 12 months, depending on where they are injected. They will fade more quickly in areas of the face that move frequently, such as the mouth area. Botox injections last for a shorter time, usually 3–4 months.
What are the risks of injectable treatments?
Injectable treatments are known for their excellent safety profile. Serious side effects very rarely occur, and when they do, it is typically due to poor technique on the part of the practitioner. Rest assured that you are in good hands at our clinic; you’ll be attended to by expert professionals who have performed these procedures countless times for many satisfied clients.
Patients can expect some minor swelling and bruising after filler injections which typically resolve within a few days. Other side effects may include minor redness, tenderness, itchiness and the appearance of small lumps; these will all resolve within 2–4 weeks at most.
Neurotoxin injections can sometimes cause side effects such as allergic reactions, headache, nausea, fatigue and swelling or drooping in the eyelid area. These effects generally resolve after a few days, however if you experience worsening symptoms, be sure to contact us immediately.
Do injectable treatments require an anaesthetic?
Filler and neurotoxin injections use a very small needle, and are not known to be especially painful. However, it’s normal to experience some discomfort during a procedure.
Some fillers contain a small amount of anaesthetic to help ease pain. At your request, we can also apply either ice or a topical anaesthetic to the treatment area before injection to further ensure your comfort.
